We recently had reason to celebrate and set out looking for something different to make the occasion even more memorable. As none of us are familiar with Korean cuisine we settled on the Meekak Korean BBQ Restaurant in Morayfield, Qld.
It is a beautiful, open space with a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The menu is extensive and can be a bit overwhelming. For starters we chose deep fried calamari and prawn plates. It was delicious! Very light and perfectly complimented by the condiments.
Mains were Bulgogi dupbab, Chicken Teriyaki dupbab, Jjajang bap and Haemul bokum odun. Don’t worry if you have no idea what this means as all the dishes are described in English on the menu.
Bulgogi dupbab is sweet soy sauced beef served on rice.
Chicken teriyaki dupbab is basically self-explanatory, i.e. deep fried teriyaki chicken served on rice.
Jjajang bap is pork and vegetables in a black bean sauce served on rice.
Haemul bokum odun is udon noodles with stir-fried seafood and vegetables.
The servings are very generous, the service fast and friendly, the food simply delicious and the prices almost unbelievable. It is very good value for money. We are already planning our next visit!
When eating at home our kids are high maintenance, but when it comes to eating out they both turn into adventurers willing to taste other cuisine. So it didn’t come as a surprise when our oldest daughter called to tell us that she found a great little place we just need to dine at.
She was referring to the casual Mexican food restaurant Guzman Y Gomez (GYG). Just to strengthen her argument she reminded me that it was Cinco de Mayo. GYG celebrates this by offering burritos for a mere $5 – who can resist this?
We ordered beef, chicken and vegetarian burritos. My first impression was that one burrito per person will be inadequate for dinner. How wrong I was! It is a HUGE feed. I have to admit that we found the combination of beans and rice inside a burrito a bit strange at first.
The filling consisted of your choice of meat, rice, black beans, cheese and salsa. The vegetarian burrito is filled with sautéed capsicum, onion and mushroom topped off with guacamole. The vegetarian one will definitely be my choice in the future. If you are gluten intolerant, you have the option to forego the tortilla and have yours served in a bowl.
Other options on the menu include enchiladas, fajitas, tacos, quesadillas, nachos, salads and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. I also have to mention that it was BUSY but the staff at the North Lakes stores was simply amazing. They were effective, super-fast and continued to serve with a smile.
Montville is a picturesque little town in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and one of our favourite destinations for a day trip. It is a delightful place to while away the hours surrounded by quirky artefacts, inspiring art, jewellery, exotic prints from faraway lands and mouth-watering chocolates, ice creams and fudge.
It is also a little town offering a huge range of restaurants and coffee houses. The cold mountain wind made our choice really easy – we ducked into the first restaurant that offered protection from the elements and what a good choice it turned out to be.
The Glasshouse Bistro is situated inside Camphor Cottage and operates from Friday to Tuesday. We were greeted so warmly and friendly and immediately made to feel right at home.
I love the fact that the Bistro utilises seasonal, local and organic ingredients in their dishes. Our vegetarian daughter chose a fruit salad and coconut tea for a bit of warmth. The aroma of the tea was delightful.
As the bistro serves an all-day breakfast, our youngest chose a bacon and egg roll which she promptly declared to the best tasting one she has ever had. I have to warn you though, that declaration is given almost every time she enjoys this dish.
We chose the curry share platter and were blown away by the intricate flavours. Of course every time we added a different condiment, we enjoyed a totally different taste sensation. A firm favourite for both of us was the lime pickles – the chef’s speciality. We loved the whole experience – the staff was outstanding, the food delicious and the total cost a pleasant surprise.
It was one of those rare wet and miserable weather weekends in Queensland. We didn’t feel like cooking and none of the usual take away places took our fancy. Luckily for us NAMU recently opened its doors in our neighbourhood, so crisis diverted ;-)
NAMU’s menu features noodles, fried and grilled chicken, sushi and bento boxes. We are crazy about bento boxes, therefore the choice was easy: Teriyaki chicken bento and Aburi teriyaki salmon. All bento boxes include seafood gyoza, spring rolls, takoyaki calamari ring, sea bite, salad, rice and your chosen meat.
The service was outstanding. We tried to phone an order through but figured they were too busy when we couldn’t reach them. Content to watch the end of the footy match before heading out to the store, we were very surprise to receive a phone call with an apology because they missed our call. In addition, our order only took 10 minutes and it was delicious! The fried food was not in the least bit oily, the salad was fresh, the fish juicy and the flame grilled aroma of the chicken was outstanding. NAMU instantly converted us to fans – give the bento boxes a try, even if you are not a fan of Japanese cuisine – you won’t be disappointed.
