If there is one place on the West Australian coastline where you can bet on the wind it will be Lancelin. It is the windsurfing Mecca of the West. If you are into kite surfing, you’ll note that there are some areas on the main beach where kiting is not allowed. Looking at the horizon filled with kites, it is clear that kiters have found plenty of places to launch from.
The Lancelin Ocean Classic is an annual windsurfing competition attracting competitors from all over the world. The event is now in its 23rd year and is run over four days.
Fishing is good at Lancelin due to the large number of reefs along the coastline. The town is home to a fleet of about 80 crayfish boats. With 14 shipwrecks along the coast it also makes for good diving.
All the action isn’t water related in this town! Just behind the town you’ll find some of the largest sand dunes in the state. It is quite an awesome sight to behold. Pure white sand dunes stretch ahead as far as the eye can see. This is the playground of all things 4x4.
And then there is sand boarding! Hours of fun to slide down the steep hills … and darn hard work walking back up the hill to start all over again. Don’t despair if you don’t have a 4WD vehicle, as there are plenty of tour operators to take you out.
Where? 130km north of Perth
Facilities: Lancelin is a full fledged town with excellent facilities such as shops, a tavern, various restaurants, take away shops, surf shop, two service stations, etc. There are plenty of accommodation options.
