Paniyiri is Brisbane’s annual Greek festival in its 33rd year and definitely an event you need to attend if you appreciate good food. This festival showcasing Hellenic hospitality is traditionally held in May.
Apart from culinary delights visitors also feasted on a variety of entertainment. 2009 saw performances by the Hellenic Dance Group, the Greek goddess Effie and Maria Maroulis. Of course no Greek festival would be complete without the Zorba till you drop and honey puff and olive eating competitions.
There were more than 30 food stalls enticing us with culinary delicacies from all corners of Greece. Food demonstrations inside the Greek Club uncovered secrets and recipes behind traditional Greek dishes. Remember to use this opportunity to explore the history and splendour of the Greek Orthodox Church of St George.
The young ones enjoyed sideshow ally with amusement rides and games. At the end of the day everybody kicked back to marvel at fireworks while enjoying yet another cup of traditional Greek coffee.
